Signed W&H Co. on the inside, this gold filled locket was made by Wightman & Hough of Providence, one of the most respected American locket makers of its time. A crescent of paste stones sweeps around a small star set with a single stone, and the reverse still carries its original hand-engraved monogram, a quiet reminder of the person it was first made for.
The crescent moon was a favorite motif of the late Victorian era, tied to new beginnings, romance and the honeymoon itself. Lockets like this one marked a marriage, a promise or a milestone, and were worn close as a keepsake.
It hangs from a gold filled chain with a secure box clasp, at an easy mid-chest length. It has great presence on its own, and it layers beautifully with a shorter chain or a favorite charm.

Provenance
Wightman & Hough Co. was founded in Providence, Rhode Island in 1856 and became well known for gold filled, rolled gold and sterling lockets, medallions and seals, marked with the W&H Co. signature. The crescent and star motif, paste stone setting and hand-engraved monogram all point to the late Victorian period, around the 1880s to early 1900s. That dating comes from the style, since the piece carries no dated mark.
